What they say, isn’t always what they mean…
After 8 years of living in Germany, I have had a lot of experience with miscommunication. Whether it is me trying to get my point across in German or non-native English speakers trying to get their meaning understood, the fun just never seems to end. I recently saw this Anglo-Continental Europe Translation Guide and had a good laugh. If you are a native English speaker, sometimes you forget that what you say might not be interpreted the way you mean it. The guide below is a bit exaggerated, but there is definitely some truth in it.
